भगवान श्री हनुमान जी का श्री राम जी के प्रति समर्पण, भक्ति और प्रेम हम सभी अनेक कथाओं, भजनों और काव्यों के माध्यम से सुनते आए हैं। इन्हीं में से एक है हम सभी का प्रिय हनुमान चालीसा (Hanuman Chalisa), जो महाकवि गोस्वामी तुलसीदास जी द्वारा रचित है। इसमें 40 चौपाइयों के माध्यम से हनुमान जी के गुणों, बल और पराक्रम का वर्णन किया गया है।

श्री गुरु के चरणों की धूल से अपने मन के दर्पण को साफ करके (अर्थात अपने गुरु को याद करते हुए अपनी बुद्धि को शुद्ध करके),
मैं श्री रामचंद्रजी के निर्मल यश का वर्णन करता हूँ, जो चारों प्रकार के फल (धर्म, अर्थ, काम, मोक्ष) देने वाला है।
अपने आपको बुद्धिहीन जानकर, मैं पवन कुमार (हनुमान जी) का स्मरण करता हूँ,
हे पवन पुत्र, मुझे बल, बुद्धि, और विद्या प्रदान करें और मेरे सभी दुखों, रोगों और दोषों का नाश करें।

जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुन सागर ।
जय कपीस तिहुँ लोक उजागर ॥
हनुमान जी की जय हो, जो ज्ञान और गुणों के सागर हैं।

राम दूत अतुलित बल धामा ।
अंजनि पुत्र पवनसुत नामा ॥
आप श्रीराम के दूत और असीम बल के भंडार हैं।

महाबीर बिक्रम बजरंगी ।
कुमति निवार सुमति के संगी ॥
आप महान वीर हैं, जिनका अद्वितीय पराक्रम और बल है, और आप बजरंगी (वज्र के समान बलवान) हैं।
आप कुमति (बुरी बुद्धि) को नष्ट करने वाले और सुमति (अच्छी बुद्धि) के संग रहने वाले हैं।
कंचन बरन बिराज सुबेसा ।
कानन कुण्डल कुँचित केसा ॥
आपका शरीर स्वर्ण के रंग का है और आप सुन्दर वेश में सुशोभित हैं।
आपके कानों में कुंडल हैं और आपके केश घुंघराले हैं।
हाथ बज्र औ ध्वजा बिराजै ।
काँधे मूँज जनेउ साजै ॥
आपके हाथ में वज्र और ध्वजा (ध्वज) शोभायमान हैं।
आपके कंधे पर मूँज का जनेऊ सुशोभित है।
संकर सुवन केसरीनंदन ।
तेज प्रताप महा जग बंदन ॥
आप शिवजी के अंश और केसरी जी के पुत्र हैं।
आपके महान तेज और प्रताप की समस्त जगत में वंदना होती है।
बिद्यावान गुनी अति चातुर ।
राम काज करिबे को आतुर ॥
आप विद्वान, गुणी और अत्यंत चतुर हैं।
आप श्रीराम के कार्य करने के लिए सदा उत्सुक रहते हैं।
प्रभु चरित्र सुनिबे को रसिया ।
राम लषन सीता मन बसिया ॥
आप श्रीराम जी के चरित्र (रामकथा वर्णन) को सुनने वाले रसिया (प्रेमी) हैं।
श्रीराम, लक्ष्मण और सीता जी आपके मन में सदा निवास करते हैं।
सूक्ष्म रूप धरि सियहिं दिखावा ।
बिकट रूप धरि लंक जरावा ॥
आपने सूक्ष्म (छोटा) रूप धारण कर माता सीता जी के समक्ष प्रकट हुए।
फिर आपने विकराल (बड़ा) रूप धारण कर लंका को जला दिया।
भीम रूप धरि असुर सँहारे ।
रामचन्द्र के काज सँवारे ॥
आपने भीम (महान) रूप धारण कर असुरों का संहार किया।
और श्रीराम जी के कार्यों को पूरा किया।
लाय सजीवन लखन जियाये ।
श्री रघुबीर हरषि उर लाये ॥
आपने संजीवनी बूटी लाकर लक्ष्मण जी को जीवनदान दिया।
श्री रघुवीर जी(राम) ने प्रसन्न होकर आपको अपने हृदय से लगा लिया।
रघुपति कीन्ही बहुत बड़ाई ।
तुम मम प्रिय भरतहि सम भाई ॥
श्री राम ने आपकी बहुत प्रशंसा की।
उन्होंने कहा, “तुम मेरे लिए भरत के समान प्रिय भाई हो।”
सहस बदन तुम्हरो जस गावैं ।
अस कहि श्रीपति कण्ठ लगावैं ॥
हजारों मुख (हजारों मुखों वाले शेषनाग) आपके यश का गान करते हैं।
ऐसा कहकर श्री रामचन्द्रजी ने आपको गले से लगा लिया।
सनकादिक ब्रह्मादि मुनीसा ।
नारद सारद सहित अहीसा ॥
सनकादि ऋषि, ब्रह्मा, और अन्य मुनि भी,
नारद, सरस्वती और शेषनाग के साथ आपकी महिमा का वर्णन करते हैं।
जम कुबेर दिगपाल जहाँ ते ।
कबि कोबिद कहि सके कहाँ ते ॥
यमराज, कुबेर, दिग्पाल (दिशाओं के देवता) आदि सभी,
कहां तक आपकी महिमा का वर्णन कर सकते हैं? यह तो कवि और पंडित भी नहीं कर सकते।
तुम उपकार सुग्रीवहिं कीन्हा ।
राम मिलाय राज पद दीन्हा ॥
आपने सुग्रीव पर उपकार किया,
उन्हें श्री राम से मिलाकर उनका खोया हुआ राज्य वापस दिलाया।
तुम्हरो मंत्र बिभीषण माना ।
लंकेस्वर भए सब जग जाना ॥
विभीषण जी आपके कहे गए वचनो के अनुसार चले,
जिसके कारण वे लंका के राजा बने, यह सब जगत जानता है।
जुग सहस्त्र जोजन पर भानु ।
लील्यो ताहि मधुर फल जानू ॥
पृथ्वी से हजारों युग मील की दूरी(जहाँ पहुंचने में हजारों युगों का समय लगेगा) पर स्थित सूर्य को आपने,
मीठा फल समझकर निगल लिया।
प्रभु मुद्रिका मेलि मुख माहीं ।
जलधि लाँघि गये अचरज नाहीं ॥
श्री राम की मुद्रिका (अंगूठी) को मुख में रखकर,
आप समुद्र लांघ गए, इसमें कोई आश्चर्य नहीं है।
दुर्गम काज जगत के जेते ।
सुगम अनुग्रह तुम्हरे तेते ॥
जगत के जितने भी कठिन कार्य हैं,
वे आपके आशीर्वाद से सहज ही हो जाते हैं।
राम दुआरे तुम रखवारे ।
होत न आज्ञा बिनु पैसारे ॥
आप श्री राम के द्वार के रक्षक हैं,
आपकी आज्ञा के बिना कोई भी प्रवेश नहीं कर सकता।
सब सुख लहै तुम्हारी सरना ।
तुम रक्षक काहू को डरना ॥
आपकी शरण में आने से सभी तरह के सुखों की प्राप्ति होती है,
जिसके रक्षक आप हैं, तो उसे किसी भी प्रकार से डरने की आवश्यकता नहीं है।
आपन तेज सम्हारो आपै ।
तीनों लोक हाँक तें काँपै ॥
आप अपने अतुलनीय तेज को स्वयं ही नियंत्रित रखते हैं।
आपकी एक गर्जना से तीनों लोक (स्वर्ग, पृथ्वी, पाताल) कांप जाते हैं।
भूत पिशाच निकट नहिं आवै ।
महाबीर जब नाम सुनावै ॥
भूत-पिशाच आपके नाम का स्मरण करने से पास नहीं आते।
जब महावीर हनुमान का नाम लिया जाता है, तो सभी दुष्ट शक्तियां दूर हो जाती हैं।
नासै रोग हरै सब पीरा ।
जपत निरंतर हनुमत बीरा ॥
आपके नाम का निरंतर जाप करने से रोग और सारी पीड़ाएं समाप्त हो जाती हैं।
जो वीर हनुमान का निरंतर जाप करता है, उसके सारे कष्ट दूर हो जाते हैं।
संकट तें हनुमान छुड़ावै ।
मन क्रम बचन ध्यान जो लावै ॥
हनुमान जी सभी संकटों से मुक्ति प्रदान करते हैं,
जो मन, वचन, और कर्म से उनका ध्यान करते हैं।
सब पर राम तपस्वी राजा ।
तिनके काज सकल तुम साजा ॥
श्रीराम सभी के राजा और महान तपस्वी हैं,
आपने उनके सभी कार्यों को सिद्ध किया है।
और मनोरथ जो कोइ लावै ।
सोई अमित जीवन फल पावै ॥
जो भी कोई अपनी इच्छा लेकर आपके पास आता है,
वह अपने जीवन में असीमित फल प्राप्त करता है।
चारों जुग परताप तुम्हारा ।
है परसिद्ध जगत उजियारा ॥
चारों युगों में आपका प्रताप (महिमा) फैला हुआ है,
आपकी कीर्ति से संपूर्ण जगत आलोकित (प्रकाशित) है।
साधु संत के तुम रखवारे ।
असुर निकंदन राम दुलारे ॥
आप साधु-संतों के रक्षक हैं,
आप असुरों का संहार करने वाले और श्रीराम के प्यारे हैं।
अष्ट सिद्धि नौ निधि के दाता ।
अस बर दीन जानकी माता ॥
आप अष्ट सिद्धि और नौ निधियों के दाता हैं,
ऐसा वरदान आपको माता जानकी ने दिया है।
राम रसायन तुम्हरे पासा ।
सदा रहो रघुपति के दासा ॥
श्रीराम का अमृत (प्रसाद) आपके पास है,
आप सदा से श्रीराम के सेवक हैं।
तुम्हरे भजन राम को पावै ।
जनम जनम के दुख बिसरावै ॥
आपके भजन से श्रीराम की प्राप्ति होती है,
और जन्म-जन्म के दुख मिट जाते हैं।
अंत काल रघुबर पुर जाई ।
जहाँ जन्म हरि-भक्त कहाई ॥
अंत समय में श्रीराम के धाम को प्राप्त होते हैं,
और वहां जन्म लेने पर भगवान के भक्त कहे जाते हैं।
और देवता चित्त न धरई ।
हनुमत सेइ सर्ब सुख करई ॥
अन्य देवताओं में ध्यान लगाने की आवश्यकता नहीं है,
क्योंकि हनुमान जी की भक्ति से सभी सुख प्राप्त होते हैं।
संकट कटै मिटै सब पीरा ।
जो सुमिरै हनुमत बलबीरा ॥
संकट कट जाते हैं और सभी पीड़ाएं समाप्त हो जाती हैं,

तुलसीदास जी कहते हैं की वे सदा से भगवान श्रीराम के सेवक हैं,

With the dust of the Guru’s lotus feet, I cleanse the mirror of my mind,
and then I narrate the pure glory of Shri Ram, the bestower of the fourfold fruits of life (dharma, artha, kama, moksha).
Considering myself devoid of intelligence, I remember you, O Hanuman,
and pray to you to grant me strength, wisdom, and knowledge, and to remove my sorrows and impurities.
